Red at the Bone
So many things happen in this story that it’s hard to say what it’s ‘about.’ It’s about love, and family and the Tulsa Race Massacre and Brooklyn and getting pregnant young and falling in love for the first time and heartbreak and motherhood and daughterhood – this list goes on and on.

Brooklyn, Chicago, Atlanta, Oberlin College.
Where I wrote it:
Park Slope, Brooklyn, France, Mallorca and finally finished first draft in Tuscany.
Why I wrote it:
I didn’t learn about the Tulsa Race Massacre until I was in my early 20s. I wanted to understand Black wealth and too often, the lack thereof. I also wanted to write about some many of the themes Red At The Bone interrogates.
